The Canadian Music Centre acts today as one of the major leaders
in servicing the new music community by not only making music
and information of Canadian composers accessible, but also by
proactively forging new avenues to ensure that the music is heard
and performed to an ever wider audience. Through special projects
and partnerships with various ensembles and organizations, the
Canadian Music Centre has raised the profile and visibility of
Canadian composers and has evolved into a central nerve centre
for the dissemination and promotion of Canadian music. The CMC
helps to establish and solidify the careers of its members by providing
ongoing networking opportunities through workshops and various
consultation services.
The CMC’s reach of services is extensive and expands into
all facets of the music sector. CMC serves researchers, educators,
students, the media and ultimately the public as an active advocate
and promoter of Canadian new music. With accessibility being central
to the CMC’s mission, the Centre makes available on loan
over 22,000+ scores and/or works of Canadian contemporary music
composers through its lending library, offers on-demand printing,
provides music repertoire consultations, and maximizes the use
of new media technologies to reach an ever greater audience.
The CMC also engages in a number of National outreach projects,
is digitizing all its scores and works, conducts research, and
administers several awards.
The CMC maintains its own label, Centrediscs,
and also distributes currently more than 1300 CD and DVD titles
featuring the music of its Associate Composers and other Canadian
recording artists via its CMC Distribution Service Inc. unit.
The CMC’s website
offers advanced features including an online library catalogue,
scores and archival audio samples of composers’ music, a
Podcast, streaming of over 9000 archival recordings, award-winning
interactive educational tools for teachers and students, a news
section, web-links and a national concert calendar listing composers’ premiers
and concerts.
The Centre remains committed to devoting significant effort
and emphasis on placing the works of Canadian composers front
and centre in the minds of Canadians. The CMC works to ensure
that Canadian composers are gaining greater visibility through
their works being discovered and taught to young performers.
With the mission of advancing the development and growth of a
vibrant and healthy new music community, the CMC has endeavoured
to break down pre-conceived notions about new music by providing
high quality and memorable first hand musical experiences by
featuring some 40 concerts and events through its popular New
Music in New Places program.
