Daniel Janke (b. 1957) has composed music for concert stage, theatre, film, television, and dance. Commissions include String Quartet No. 1, for the Penderecki String Quartet; Silent Movie, for the Continuum Contemporary Music Ensemble; Odysseus and Kalypso, for Batterie Park Percussion Ensemble; Main Road, for the Evergreen Club Gamelan. Janke's Miniatures for Chamber Orchestra, was premiered by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne du Quebec.
Film and television scores include Touch, a film by Jeremy Podeswa; and the CBC Television series Northern Town. The contemporary dance work Cinco Puntos Cardinales for five dancers, male chorus, and solo violin (violin Mark Fewer) was composed for Danza Contemporanea, Lima, Peru.
Daniel Janke plays piano and kora, a West African harp-lute. He has recorded with Bruce Cockburn, as well as with Rick Lazar and the Montuno Police to name a few. His own recordings include: Longest Night Ensemble, not too DARK [1999]; In A Room [1995]; Big Dance [1990 featuring Holly Cole].
Also a filmmaker, Daniel is writer/co-producer of the TV series Northern Town; and writer/director of the short film How People Got Fire for the NFB. He lives near Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.
