Steven Naylor composes for concert performance, and creates scores and sound designs for professional theatre, television, film, and radio.
His present focus is multi-channel electroacoustic concert music, with equal emphasis on radiophonic and acousmatic works. In addition to composing, his activities in support of electroacoustic music in Canada include co-production of the Oscillations Festival of Electroacoustic Music (2003, 2005), and participation on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community, including a term as President.
He also continues to be active as a pianist, performing and recording with contemporary music ensembles concerned with improvisation and collective creation. Recent highlights include a CD with the Paul Cram Orchestra, recorded live at Jazz em Agosto in Lisbon (2004), and a performance of Barry Guy’s Witchgong Game II/10, with the Upstream Orchestra (2006).
As an educator, Naylor taught and developed a curriculum in electroacoustic music at Dalhousie University during seven years as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Music. More recently, he has been associated with Acadia University, as a research consultant, and as a part-time faculty member in the School of Music.
Steven Naylor completed the PhD in Musical Composition, supervised by Jonty Harrison, at the University of Birmingham, UK, and undergraduate degrees at the University of Waterloo and Waterloo Lutheran University. He also studied composition with Steve Tittle at Dalhousie University, and participated several times in the International Composers' Workshop in The Netherlands, and in Bulgaria.
