Colin Timothy Eatock
 Biography

Colin Eatock was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and began writing music as a teenager. He later studied at the University of Western Ontario, and at the University of Toronto, with composers Alan Heard, John Beckwith, Lothar Klein, and R. Murray Schafer. He has written for a variety of media, including works for solo instruments, voice, chamber ensembles, choir, and orchestra. He writes slowly and carefully, and his music is essentially tonal. His compositions are inclined towards a post-modern aesthetic, but his works also reveal the influence of such modernists as Messiaen and Shostakovich. In addition to writing music, Eatock also writes about music. He has contributed many articles on music to the Globe and Mail, Opera Canada, and Words and Music. Between 1991 and 1994 he was the editor and publisher of Soundnotes, a small journal about Canadian music. He also organizes concerts in Toronto under the name Salon des Refuses.
