 Biography |
A composer and cellist, Sean Varah was raised in Vancouver, Canada, and studied cello with Judith Fraser, Eric Wilson, and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi.
His composition studies began at Stanford University, where he worked at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).
In his graduate studies in New York, he studied with Mario Davidovsky, adapting traditional electronic tape studio techniques to digital technology. He co-founded the Harvard Computer Music Center in 1994, and taught there for three years before moving to San Francisco.
His music bridges the gap between technology and traditional acoustic music. His works for instruments and tape combine idiomatic writing for acoustic instruments with striking yet subtle synthesized sounds.
His works have been performed in Carnegie Hall, the National Arts Center in Ottawa, Canada, and broadcast on NPR and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
