ALAIN LALONDE was born in Montréal in 1951. After studying piano at the École Vincent-d'Indy, he continued his training with Gilles Tremblay at the Montréal Conservatory where he won prizes in writing, analysis and composition. At the same time he was active in various fields as an organizer, creator, director and teacher with children and adults. Since 1978 he has been responsible for courses in solfège and dictation, vocal reading, instrumentation, and tonal harmonic analysis at the Faculty of Music of the University of Montréal.
He has composed works for various ensembles, from solo flutes, in Trois solos d'un personnage, to orchestra in Air-Métal (first prize from CAPAC in 1980). He was a participant in the madcap and fraternal collective adventure called La Folia, commissioned by the CBC in October 1984, Fanfares-Musiques des jardins sans complexe in October 1987, and Fanfares-plus at the Festival de Liège in Belgium with the Groupe des Sisses. He received grants from The Canada Council and Ministère des Affaires culturelles du Québec in 1985-86 and is currently engaged in doctoral studies in composition at the University of Montréal under Michel Longtin.
In his most recent works, Espaces; Étude de distances, de relations, de contacts, de communication, d'ouverture; À la recherche de...; Dans l'Univers; l'Amour; Mouvances, Errances, et toute cette sorte d'ances, the composer's creative process has led him to occupy the whole performance area, using space as an expressive element in the musical message, and creating a variety of types of relationships and communication among the performers, and between the performers and the participating public.
