Born in 1956, ANDRÉ VILLENEUVE first studied piano at Quebec's Conservatory of Music under Guy Bourassa, then composition and analysis at Montréal's Conservatory of Music with Gilles Tremblay, counterpoint and orchestration with Clermont Pépin, conducting with Raffi Armenian.

After winning first prizes in composition and analysis in 1983, the Canada Arts Council awarded him a scholarship, enabling him to study in Paris under Claude Ballif. With help from the Canada Council and the Québec Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the following year, André completed the first two pieces of a large cycle entitled "Terre" which he conceived in 1983.

He taught four years at the Conservatory of Music of Montréal and is now teaching at the University of Quebec as a "chargé de cours".
