Often associated with lyrical melodicism, the concept of 'beautiful music'; though subjective, undoubtedly encompasses a much wider range of expression. My own concept of beautiful music, in a very general sense, includes any moments that please the ear and/or the mind. In addition to expressive melody, I find beauty, for instance, in intense drama, raw energy and unexpected twists and turns.
In writing "Beautiful Things", I began by sketching a number of independent musical moments, interpreting the concept of beauty in a variety of ways: the quirkiness of erratic fluctuations of pulse, the moment of extreme tension cutting to absolute calm, the striking complexity of pitch clusters bending in and out of tune. These musical snapshots formed the basis of this two-movement work. The opening movement, "Curiosities", is a scherzo characterised by the lurching momentum of a broken metronome or wind-up toy. "Inside Out" is a movement of more dramatic weight, alternating turbulent agression with intimate reflection.
"Beautiful Things" was commissioned by Festival Vancouver for the Smith Quartet, who premiered the work on August 4, 2005.
