This piece was commissioned for young people by the Norman Burgess Memorial Fund. It was written for and premiered by the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) String Orchestra, conducted by Michael Schulte. August 16th, 2008
This piece introduces students to contemporary techniques. The form is a type of variation form, in which the same material returns to be developed in different ways yet always climbs from the low to high register. At the high points, the lines tumble down with a variety of contemporary techniques, ranging from free rhythmic sections to seagull glissandi. The piece changes when the players yet again climb up to the high point, however this time they sing and play at the climax of the piece. This breaks the pattern and the music relaxes, finally being allowed to rise to a peaceful ending.
As part of the premiere, a contest was held to name the piece. The winner is Adam Despinic of Hamilton. Congratulations and thank you.
