In this series of blog posts, we get to know some of the Associate Composers who have joined the CMC in Ontario Region. This week, we speak with Roydon Tse. Apart from his extensive activities in Canada and abroad, we at the CMC have a bit of a history with Roydon: he won the Canadian Music Center Prairies Emerging Composer Prize in 2013, and he also participated in the CMC Class Axe Guitar Workshop in 2014.
CMC: What got you excited about music at a young age?
I don't know who concocted that silly unspoken rule in Music School in the first place. The one that dictates that the contents of any classically-trained musician or composers' record collections should remain their dirty little secret.
This week we catch up with new Associate Composer, Tyler Versluis. Tyler grew up in St. Catharines Ontario, and is now studying and working in Toronto. Tyler always struck me as the kind of person who is unwilling to take the spotlight unless he is standing in it with several other people. Currently embroiled in the drama of setting up his DMA recital (which is happening on October 30, by the way), he offered some insights into his history and outlook.
