The Royal Canadian College of Organists Edmonton Centre (RCCO Edmonton) is pleased to welcome Calgary organist Jim Picken as he presents organ music From Bach to the Beatles — the first concert in RCCO Edmonton’s 2015-2016 ORGANiC (Organ in Concert) Series. On Monday, November 23, 2015, Calgary organist Jim Picken will perform a recital of works for organ spanning music from Bach to the Beatles at First Presbyterian Church (10025 105 Street) at 7:30 PM.

The evening’s programme starts off with J.S. Bach’s Toccata, Adagio and Fugue. It continues with C.V. Stanford’s Sonata Eroica and C. Franck’s Chorale No. 1 – a theme and variations where Franck himself stated “the theme creates itself as the form progresses.” Two hymn preludes based on shape note tunes (Holy Manna and Oh Brother, Be Faithful) by Calgarian organist/composer Arthur Ward are next up, followed by Swiss organist/composer Guy Bovet homage to the time he spent teaching Spanish organ music at Spain’s University of Salamanca in his prelude Salamanca. The concert finishes with British organist/composer Paul Ayres’ toccata arrangement of the Beatles tune All You Need Is Love.

Jim Picken is an Associate Director of Music Ministry at Knox Presbyterian Church, accompanist of the Calgary Men’s Chorus, and enjoys the life of a collaborative musician. He began organ lessons with Robert H. Bell in Calgary c. 1965, and completed his M.Mus. (Organ Performance) in 2011 with Neil Cockburn. He is a past president of the Calgary Society of Organists, and a member of the RCCO.

The 1909 Casavant Frères organ in First Presbyterian is a unique and outstanding example of the warm rich tones of that time. The tonal qualities are further enhanced by the warm ambience and acoustics of the gracious historic building.

The 2007 organ restoration and expansion, completed in time for the RCCO national/international organ convention, endeavoured to ensure that the original tonal character of the instrument be maintained; and that it remains an excellent example of the tonal styles of the early 1900s. This was an immense success.

Tickets for From Bach to the Beatles are $20 (General), $15 (Students/Seniors), and $10 (Members), and are available at the door.
