Matteo Gemolo is an Italian flautist and a Music PhD. Both as a performer and as a researcher, he is on the forefront in researching, commissioning and performing new music for the one-keyed flute.

He regularly plays with leading ensembles and orchestras such as Vox Luminis (Lionel Meunier), Les Muffatti (Peter van Heyghen), Le Concert d'Anvers (Bart van Reyn), Silete Venti (Simone Toni), Apotheosis Ensemble (Korneel Bernolet), Ad Mosam (Huub Ehlen), Terra Nova Collective (Vlad Weverbergh), B.O.X. (Pieter Theuns), Ensemble A (Eva Vermeren), Transports publics (Thomas Baeté), Oficina Musicum (Riccardo Favero), and performs on the main stages and festivals such as: Concertgebouw Brugge, Bozar in Brussels, De Singel in Antwerp, Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, Festival de Sablé, Festival des Abbeyes en Lorraine, Musica Sacra Maastricht, Ravenna Festival, Grandezze e Meraviglie in Modena, Venetian Centre for Baroque Music in Venice, Spazio & Musica at Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Festival Accademia Bizantina, Coudenberg in Brussels, Teatro dell'Arte in Milan, Teatro Della Pergola in Florence, Ars in Cathedrali in Brussels, Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, and many others.

​Next to a traditional repertoire, he has consecrated himself to contemporary music in order to create a new repertoire for period instruments, working with Belgian ensemble Europa Ritrovata, whereof he is the artistic director. He collaborates with several composers which have already dedicated a number of pieces to him such as: Belgian Joachim Brackx (In sacred Silence, quartet for 2 traversos, viola and viola da gamba, Dunkles Haus Stiller Garten. for 8 traversos, Imagination does not exist for voice, traverso and double bass), Italian Giovanni Sparano (Clio, for traverso and Live Electronics) and American Albert Behar (Barococorico, Suite for 2 traversos, harpsichord and string orchestra).

​He is currently working with Europa Ritrovata on a recording project entitled "The contemporary Traverso" premiering works by Hans-Martin Linde, Jukka Tiensuu and Jacqueline Fontyn.

​He has recently collaborated with Icelandic composer and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson (B.O.X. and The Golden Glows) in a project entitled “On Moonlight and Rain” where period instruments, pop and electronic music are combined together in order to create a supernatural musical and visual journey based on a collection of Japanese tales from the 17th Century.

​Since 2013, he has been working at the Conservatory of Music in Venice where he gives yearly lectures and seminaries of Historical Performance Practice on Traverso. Since 2016, he is a columnist on the main Italian Flute Quarterly "FaLaUt" where he writes articles about the contemporary new repertoire for the one-key flute. He writes on the American Peer Review "The Flutist Quarterly", as well.

​He graduated in 2008 from the “Benedetto Marcello” Conservatory in Venice, under Federica Lotti. He went on with his studies, focusing on the Traverso (one-keyed flute), with the tutorship of Sergio Balestracci, and Marcello Gatti. In 2010 he moved to Brussels to study the Traverso at the Royal Conservatory with Frank Theuns and Barthold Kuijken, where he accomplisehd his studies with a Master degree “cum laude” in Art in 2015.

In parallel, after a Bachelor diploma in Philosophy from the University of Padua (2009), he obtained a Master degree “summa cum laude” in Musicolgy at the “Cà Foscari” University in Venice, with a dissertation entitled "Modernity of the Traverso".

​He was awarded a scholarship and a grant to begin a 3 years PhD in Music Performance at Cardiff University, under the guidance of Professor Charles Wilson and flautist Rachel Brown.

His range of interests is quite vast: from baroque to contemporary music, from history of art to philosophy, from cinema to photography. He likes collecting antique books, vintage objects and furnitures, taking photos and petting his adorable late-romantic cats, Parsifal and Orest... His mother tongue is Italian. He talks and write fluently in English and French.
