Notes de programme :
These four songs of praise are arranged from a set of twenty-one choral preludes for organ which I composed during 1998 - 1999, based largely, but not exclusively, on Spanish and Mexican folk hymns. Since that time I have arranged various groupings of these preludes for different combinations of instruments including violin and organ; flute, violin, viola and piano; string orchestra; and wind band.

The opening 'Fanfare' is a fourfold tutti repetition of the chorus and verse from a metrical version of the 'Gloria a Dios'. Following this is an arrangment of the hymn 'Senor, proclamamos la Fe' in salsa style; the piano plays a two measure ostinato in tenths (montuno) assisted by the violin and cello, while the trombone and flute play the melody, the piece is constructed using a 2-3 clave rhythmic structure.

The third movement 'Arioso' introduces a well-known traditional melody from Mexico 'Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe' and is in two sections. In the first the individual lines of the melody are interspersed with an ornate cello obbligato-style melody, while the second section consists of the hymn harmonised with falling chromatic lines, the melody moving from instrument to instrument. The final 'Cancion' makes use of a litany-style melody by Tomas Aragues which I first heard sung in a very vigorous fashion here in Brooklyn, and which I assumed at first to be of traditional origin. The movement contains some twelve variations built on the melody's melodic and harmonic structure. (Derek Healey, Brooklyn, NY, 2002, from score)
