Notes de programme :
John Burge's Organ Concertinal, for organ and woodwind quintet was commissioned by organist Danielle Dube, long-time Music Director and Organist at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ottawa, Ontario. Danielle has been a great supporter of John's music and in 1996, Danielle and St. Peter's commissioned John Burge to compose a three-movement work for solo organ which the composer entitled, St. Peter's Sonata. This work was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Danielle's appointment at St. Peter's and the 20th anniversary of the installation of their Casavant tracker action organ. Both St. Peter's Sonata and the Organ Concertino are dedicated to Danielle.

The Organ Concertino was written for a number of performances with a woodwind quintet that Danielle had planned for 2003. Given the demanding nature of the instrumental parts, this three-movement piece could really be considered a concerto but for the small size o fthe ensemble needed to perform the work. The first movement presents two contrasting melodic ideas in the standard format of statement, development and reprise. The middle movement is actually a re-scored version of a Burge's choral arrangement of the spiritual, Let Us Break Bread Together. Originally scored for solo soprano, choir and organ, this arrangement provides a relaxing interlude to the more commanding intensity of the outer movements. The final movement has a quirky character that is created by the polytonal nature of the figuration coupled with fanfare or march-like gestures that often appear in the winds.
