Notes de programme :
Love songs sets out to depict four different aspects of love: love for a child, youthful romantic love, love and loss, and divine love. In the first section, the women sing the poem Infant Joy from William Blakes's Songs of Innocence, but in between its tow verses is heard a text of my own creation that is sung by the men and presents a somewhat different view of the beauty of a newborn child. The second sections uses two well known songs by Shakespeare: It was a Lover and his Lass ande O Mistress Mine. Its style is consciously Elizabethan and marigal-like, in a somewhat modern, modal way. Once again, the second of the texts is inserted between verses of the first. The third part opens with the women singning a poignant Song by the nineteenth century English poet Christina Rossetti. The men then present an equally poignant and profoundly sorrowful poem by her older brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, that begins What of her glass without her? From this emerges an anguished episode for the solo piano wich, along with the brief choral passage that follows, acts as a bridge into the final section of the work. For this, we return to William Blakes's Songs of Innoncence, to the poem Little Lamb, who made thee? But for the true culmination of the work I have used a text taken from my own grandfather, John w.Looney, as it was passed on to me by my mother: All this day I will be a child of God. The pastoral musings of the Blake return and the work quietly fades with the words Little Lamb, God bless Thee.
Love Songs was commissioned by the Canadian chamber Choir, a truly national choral ensemble made up of singers from across Canada who meet several times a year to rehearse and perform in different cities across the country. Their Artistic Director is Iwan Edwards.
I would like to thank Fred Louder for his invaluable assistance and advice in assembling the texts for this work.
