Hammer and wind, the concrete and the numinous—these are the edges of a continuum defining the human condition, and the manner in which we manage the relationship between the physical and spiritual determines in large measure how we understand and experience life and death. Each work on this disc is, in some way, an effort to deal with this relationship.
Two works on the disc relate in some way to death: the saxophone/piano sonata, “Hammer and Wind”, written in the shadow of Harry Somers’ passing, and dedicated to his memory; and the song cycle, “In the End”. The other two works relate more directly to life: the opening “Piano Sonata” is physical in its outer two movements, while its middle movement is resignation and calm, built from two different tonal worlds that simply live together without tension, longing, or regret. The final work, “Two by Four”, is playful and comforting, celebrating love and shelter.
Yet, there is no simple physical/spiritual parsing here; celebration has spiritual dimensions, the numinous can be playful, and meaning and purpose rely on both palpable and transcendent realities. Ultimately, then, the disc is a musical reflection on (and of) that which both defines and sustains us: heart and spirit, hammer and wind, in the complex set of relationships which, of all the arts, music expresses the best.
