For 20 years I have been trying to use less force as I play guitar and it is finally paying off. At times I can show my students how to look, how to play a passage without exerting needless force. I can shorten some notes without worry, hearing them but still feeling the meaning behind. In fact I have invested more time at working less than anything else in my musical life.

Description:

The Mountain View Connection Concert Series opens its 2014/15 season with a tour de force performance of The Goldberg Variations by J. S. Bach. Calgary is one of four stops in Canada for Iceland’s rising star, pianist Víkingur Ólafsson.

The 30 Goldberg Variations is often regarded as the most serious and ambitious composition ever written for keyboard. Based on a single ground bass theme, the variations display not only Bach's exceptional knowledge of diverse styles of music of the day but also his exquisite performing techniques.
