Notes de programme :
Jean Genet’s 1950 silent short 'Un Chant d’Amour' is a classic of the underground cinema, an erotically-charged visual poem, one of the first gay-themed films ever made. Given its undoubted artistic success, it is unfortunate that it is Genet’s only film, though it fits easily into the grand canon of his other works, employing symbols and subjects (flowers, prisons, unrequited love) that also appear in his poems, plays and novels. The plot revolves around three men in an Algerian prison: an older man and a younger man, both on death row and in some sort of love, and the prison guard who observes them, who is both aroused and horrified at the sexual energy at play within the prison. Genet left no musical instructions for the film, and it has been set many times by many different composers. My version, for organ solo, is quite spare, and does not time itself exactly to the film. It evokes the mood of Genet’s film, reflects its pacing, and is more like a companion piece than an accompaniment.

Notes de programme :
When my esteemed colleagues, Drs. William Street and Marnie Giesbrecht, approached me with the request for a new piece for alto saxophone and organ, I thought of honouring them by creating a motif/theme with some reference to their names. I chose the first and last letters of their last names (G, S, T, T), transcribed into English, German and French letter names as g – E-flat – B – b. This motif, especially the interval of the falling or rising major third/diminished fourth or expanded as an augmented chord, is heard directly or in an oblique way in all three movements. In the first movement, Passacaglia and Fugue, the four-note motif is expanded into a twelve-tone theme, though treated in a tonal fashion. In the second movement it has a more lyrical character; in the last, it appears as a more figurative theme with cluster chords. The title Passage du Temps is not so much a reference to music as a time art, but an homage to some of the great compositional devices and styles since 1700 to which I feel indebted: from the contrapuntal techniques by Bach in I, the quasi-ostinato accompanying a cantilene by Vivaldi and Bach (II, main theme), the French Romantic organ genre pieces (II, middle section) to the more “edgy” neo-Classic style of the early 20th century. The organ registrations serve as a general guide to the desired timbres and textures, but will require adjustments from one instrument to another to ensure the proper balance between the instruments.I wish to express my sincere thanks to Trent Worthington for transcribing the manuscript into digital format. - Jacobus Kloppers, Edmonton, Alberta, 2016

Notes de programme :
This arrangement of Maurice Ravel’s Bolero by John Burge was commissioned by the Orchestre symphonique de Montrèal for the Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique—a wonderful Casavant tracker pipe organ with an additional electric console for use on the stage of Maison symphonique. Requiring four organists (with optional percussion), this arrangement uses two organists at each console. The commission was initiated to coincide with the Orchestre symphonique de Montrèal 2016 Organ Competition as the final number on a concert featuring the judges of the competition. At the two consoles were Isabelle Demers, Jean-Willy Kunz, Christian Lane, and Olivier Latry. Ravel’s original orchestral score is an incredible display of orchestral acumen given that the work is simply the repetition of two sixteen-bar melodies with ever increasing instrumentation and volume all progressing above a very static two-bar repeated rhythm. The fact that the melodies are so easily recognizable helps to give music a somewhat engaging persona, especially at the beginning, but as the doublings and harmonizations increase in texture, the music becomes incredibly grandiose and almost appears to break down the walls of sound with the arrival of the brief modulation just before the ending (from C major to E major). Scored for a very large orchestra (winds in threes with 5 clarinets and three saxophones, large brass and percussion sections and ideally two harps), it is also an incredible show-piece to demonstrate the variety of registration options available on an instrument such as the Casavant installed in the OSM Maison symphonique. At the end, all four organists are not only playing handfuls of notes with both hands but are all using their feet as well to create as much volume as possible.

For those individuals wanting some technical background behind this arrangement, it uses the same rehearsal numbers employed by Ravel and matches the original in design and intent up until Rehearsal Number 13. To economise somewhat, the orchestral music found at Rehearsal Numbers 13-15 has been omitted in the organ version but after this point, the organ music follows the orchestral original score to the end. While the arranger personally favours the maintaining of a very steady tempo throughout, there is something of a tradition of performing this work with a slightly slower tempo at the beginning and gradually getting faster towards the end. This practice can be traced back to a very young Arturo Toscanini, who often performed the work in this fashion, somewhat to the initial shock of Ravel who admittedly was eventually won over to the approach.
