  • Most of the rhythmic and thematic material derives from an earlier, discarded work for a rock band ensemble at Humber College, Toronto, Ontario. Re-designed as a one movement work for brass quintet, Brass-Fast should be performed in as fast a tempo as is comfortably possible. This may be gauged from the Trumpet 1 "Solo" (beginning in bar 160). As befits the work's origin, the piece should maintain a strong, steady beat throughout. The form is a simple ABACA, with A acting as a refrain. A vamp figure in the low brass supports an agile, thickly coloured melody above. The B section is slightly more lyrical with a new rhythmic figure supporting. The C section starts with a busy trumpet solo over another vamp. However, others soon join in and instead of merging to previous material, the music dissolves into a free improvisation of great confusion. At the height of this, the music climaxes on of all things, a Bb7th chord. The A sections returns one more time and serves as a coda.

Really astute players and listeners, who also happen to be fans of the original Star Trek, will discern a melodic fragment during my transitions which was used as a suspense motive in this famous TV series.
The piece is ideally suited for the beginning of a concert segment, a final piece, an encore piece or a test piece for brass quintet.
Brass-Fast is included on the Echiquier CD, Brass Feast (ECD 007), recorded in September, 1999 by the Niagara Brass Ensemble and released in January, 2002. In addition to Brass-Fast, the composer’s brass quartet Asteroids is also featured on the same CD.
