Description:

The Canadian Music Centre, Prairie Region presents the Eighth Annual BreakOut West Classical Music Showcase, in Winnipeg, Saturday, October 4, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at the University of Winnipeg, part of the annual BreakOut West Festival. The BOW Classical Music Showcase is sponsored by FACTOR (we acknowledge the financial support of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters) and Classic 107 Radio.

The event features artists and composers nominated for Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMAs) in the categories of Classical Recording of the Year and Classical Composition of the Year. This year’s event has an innovation: There will be also a performance by a nominee in the category of Jazz Recording of the Year. A list of all of the nominees for 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards can be found at: http://breakoutwest.ca/2014-wcma/2014-wmca-nominees.

The event features the following:

Corey Hamm, BC (piano; nominee for WCMA Classical Recording of the Year for his CD The People United Will Never Be Defeated): Frederic Rzewski, USA (composer), "The People United Will Never Be Defeated!" (1975) (excerpts) and Jocelyn Morlock, BC (composer; double nominee for WCMA Classical Recording of the Year for Cobalt and WCMA Classical Composition of the Year for "Oiseaux Bleus et Sauvages"), "Corybantic" (2014; commissioned for Corey Hamm through the British Columbia Council of the Arts).

Megumi Masaki, MB (piano): T. Patrick Carrabré, MB (composer; nominee for WCMA Classical Composition of the Year for "Inuit Games:), "Orpheus Drones."

Land’s End Ensemble, AB (violin, cello, piano; nominee for WCMA Classical Recording of the Year for Gravity and Grace): Allan Gordon Bell, AB (composer; nominee for WCMA Classical Composition of the Year for "Field Notes"), "Phénomènes."

Jeff Presslaff Nonet, MB (nominee for Jazz Recording of the Year for his CD The Complete Rebirth of the Cool): "Measure for Measure for Measure," "Such Sweet Sadness," "Tango Para Rosalba," "Marda Loop."

Winnipeg's Classic 107 Morning Show host Michael Wolch will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The showcase has several anticipated purposes and outcomes:

• It motivates nominees to get to the WCMAs to accept their awards.
• It raises the profile of classical music within the WCMAs.
• It exposes the classical nominees to the local community and as well as to music industry delegates.
• It builds networking and business opportunities among the classical music nominees, and between classical music nominees and nominees in other genres.
• It works with local partners to maximize local audience participation at the event.

In 2007, the Canadian Music Centre, Prairie Region founded the Classical Music Showcase of the WCMA Awards with the blessing of the Awards' producer, Western Canadian Music Alliance; 2014 will be the Eighth Annual edition.

BreakOut West and the Western Canadian Music Awards are the primary events hosted by the Western Canadian Music Alliance (WCMA) – an organization created by the Music Industry Associations (MIA’s) of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, The Northwest Territories, and the Yukon Territory – to promote and celebrate western Canadian music. Each year the event is held in a different member region on a rotational basis. This is the 12th year and this year the event will be held in Winnipeg, MB from October 2 - 5, 2014.

The four-day event is comprised of a three-day music conference, a multi-genre music festival, the Western Canadian Music Industry Awards Brunch and the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala. All venues, events, conference panels and hotels will be within a small walk-able geographic area in downtown Winnipeg. By ensuring all event venues are within close proximity of the host hotel a feeling of a top-level event with a sense of community and comradery within the host city is generated.
