Jill Townsend

Jill Townsend is a well-known composer, arranger and educator based in Vancouver, BC.

She is a prolific writer for her own ensemble, and has written music to feature Ian McDougall, Jiggs Whigham, Campbell Ryga and Brad Turner in concert and recordings. The National Jazz Awards twice nominated the critically acclaimed Jill Townsend Big Band for Large Ensemble of the Year.

Jill's music has been recorded and performed by several ensembles throughout North America. Her composition Waltz of the Jellyfish and arrangement of Old Folks, which first appeared on the Jill Townsend Big Band CD, Tales From the Sea, have been recorded by SWOJO (Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra) and released on their latest CD, "Meeting of the Waters". Jill was also a guest conductor with SWOJO in 2006, for a concert featuring her original compositions and arrangements.

Jill's composition For My Friends was recorded by the Calgary based Prime Time Big Band, featuring award-winning saxophonist PJ Perry, and appears on their CD entitled For Our Friends. Jill has been commissioned to write big band arrangements for Juno-nominated vocalist Karin Plato and vocalist Leora Cashe. She has contributed arrangements for recordings by Mother of Pearl, (Shebop!) Canadian hip-hop artist K-OS (Yes!) and jazz vocalist Luis Geraldo. (It's Always You)

Jill received her Masters Degree in Composition from the University of Victoria, BC and completed composition residencies at the Leighton Artists Colony, Banff Centre for the Arts in 2007 and 2008. She studied composition, arranging and trombone with Ian McDougall, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell and Jiggs Whigham.
