Programme Note:
I wrote a Fugue in f in 2001, a Fugue in c# in 2007, a Fugue in b (2010) and now this is the fourth in a long-term series of fugues for solo piano I plan to write, about once every three-four years. They are like entries in a stylistic journal, snapshots of my musical preoccupations. By re-imagining the fugal form each time, I crystallise my musical thinking down to its most technical, leaving poeticism to one side and allowing myself to abstract. Writing these pieces allows me to focus on pure form, within a broad conception of the idea of fugue. Fugue in a has a clear theme and countertheme; the former is a series of quick notes in unstable rhythms, surrounded by varying degrees of silence, while the latter is more sustained and melodic material. The material develops not in terms of pitch, but through rhythmic change, especially the length of the silences in the theme.

Premiere Information:
14 June 2014, Suginami Public Hall, Tokyo, Japan. Yusuke Satoh, piano.
