Programme Note:
ALL-CANADIAN CELEBRATION: Symphonic Poem, composed for The Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra’s rank, size, and orchestration, is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference leading to the Confederation of 1867. This Symphonic Poem is a new classical work of mine that uses both classical and contemporary principles and techniques: I base my compositional vocabulary on a wide spectrum of expressions, ranging from the inspiring source of many musical elements from diverse ethnic groups in Canada, to the broad palette of the boundless new compositional techniques. I crafted a six-module soundscape of Canada, including geography, history, and multiculturalism, past and present. To make audiences better aware of the Canadian Confederation, I made this soundscape a rich tapestry comprising strands that represent a wide variety of musical styles, genres, and forms. With the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference in mind, in this new classical work I reveal a Canadian musical panorama from before the Canadian Confederation of 1867 and until now. The macrostructure of each module presents my homage to the major Western musical forms, transmuted in accordance with the requirements of the work:
• Module I - Roots - Free-form
• Module II - Native - Theme and Variations
• Module III - Francophone - Toccata
• Module IV - Anglophone - Passacaglia
• Module V - Canada Now - Free-form
• Module VI - Long Life et Longue Vie! - Fugue
The structure of this fugue is leading to and then culminating with O Canada. At the end of All-Canadian Celebration: Symphonic Poem, the performers, and the audience are invited to sing O Canada.
