Programme Note:
"Black Hawk's Soliloquy", excerpted from the opera "Black Hawk Speaks: An American Tragedy", is based on the life of the great Sauk War Chief. The text of the work is in large part derived from Black Hawk’s autobiography, first published in 1833. Although the authenticity of the autobiography has been challenged — it is impossible to determine to what extent the translator and/or the publisher embellished or even invented portions of the narrative — the text speaks with a convincing candor and moving anguish about the plight of the Native American in the American state.
