‘Loud, fat and chaotic’ music gets Canadian debut

"Andrew Norman’s symphonic composition Play is a bit like playing a video game.

Using the percussion section as the controls of the game, Norman has the musicians pause when the triangle is hit while the temple blocks signal a change of instrument and the bongo drums drive the music forward or backward.

The slap sticks engage in a fierce battle and the string section is “going nuts.”

Norman describes his symphony as “incredibly loud, fat and chaotic.”

This is new classical music, where the rule books are thrown out and modern composers create new forms to express ideas and emotions..."
