The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s North of the 49th concert Saturday was a bold experiment, combining traditional European music with Canadian, American and First Nations works.

"Throat singer Tanya Tagaq was the highlight. She added an intense dimension to a piece by composer Derek Charke that was originally written for a string quartet with a pre-recorded soundscape.

Cercle du Nord III is apparently inspired by the Canadian far north. In the program notes, Charke says he was trying to capture the natural sounds of wildlife, the wind and walking in the snow as well as snowmobiles, driving on ice roads and a power plant.."
