Programme Note:
We Occur in Biological Settings! is a site-specific work inspired by a combination of Fibonacci numbers, weird rock music, and American-Dutch minimalism. Written for the inaugural Sidenote Concert, this piece takes into consideration multiple factors in its creation, namely that its first performance is slated in a brew pub. While I personally have been delving into quiet, subtle shifts in texture and timbre in my practice, I realized that this approach would be unsuccessful in this “biological setting.” Instead, I looked to my interests in art rock and the perusal of science and math “tidbits.”Sonically, the piece doesn’t seem formulaically inclined, but several major sections are guided by the Fibonacci number sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.). In the beginning, the number of sounding notes before a pause or rest follow this sequence, reaching a maximum of 89 notes in a “phrase” before repeating and developing ideas from these phrases in a more organic manner. There are only four “chords,” fairly similar in character, throughout these phrases. It is, in this unison-oriented sense, a mild response to the music of Steve Johnson and Louis Andriessen. Rhythmically, these phrases play out and are punctuated by lilting and ever shifting metric changes inspired by the strange progressive rock genre entitled “Zeuhl,” which includes favourite bands of mine Magma and Koenjihyakkei. In the middle, where there are several layered ostinati, these patterns are on a 2 bar repeat cycle taken from the Fibonacci number sequence as well – an idea happens once, a new pattern happens once, a new pattern is laid on top of that and happens twice, etc. Eventually, new material eschews the pattern and take on their own, organiclife – after all, music, not just patterns, occurs in biological settings.
