However, being a lover of waka, I soon became very attracted to this poem, the 20th in the great Japanese poetry collection Man'yōshū, compiled in 759.Addressed to the crown prince while he was on a hunting trip in Kamau, the poem is seductive, playful, and coy, an impressive variety of moods for so short a poem. There is a reply from the prince as well, which I did not set for the singer, but which I did use as the basis for the percussion part. The two parts, percussion and voice, are moving in different worlds, yet seeking togetherness.
