Programme Note:
My Fantasy for piano was commissioned by Barbara Pritchard though a grant from Miss Mary Himsl, with additional funding provided by Barbara Pritchard and the Musikon Concert Society. When Barbara asked me to write a Fantasy for her, I immediately thought of those wonderful Fantasies from the Romantic Period that were based on some well-known theme or themes, frequently from opera. They were virtuosic, rather playful, and a lot of fun. I therefore decided I would write a Fantasy along those lines. I chose as my subject Vivaldi's Spring Concerto from the Four Seasons, since the premiere performance of the piece would take place in the spring of 2016. The Italian quotation in the title of the work is taken from the sonnet that accompanies the Spring Concerto: Giunt' è la primavera: "Spring has arrived." The work is in three sections corresponding to the three movements of the Spring Concerto. An opening flourish of 7 notes recurs throughout the work in various guises linking the three sections. The essence of the first section is my version of the joyous sounds of the birds from Vivaldi's original. The second section is an improvisation on Vivaldi's beautiful melody representing the sleeping goat-herd, accompanied by the murmuring of the trees; if you listen carefully you can also hear his faithful dog barking quietly below. In the original Vivaldi third movement, the shepherds dance to welcome spring. While I eventually pay hommage to his melody, I begin the third section with my own shepherd's dance (a jig). A boisterous and virtuosic passage for the pianist brings the Fantasy to a happy conclusion.
