Programme Note:
In Arcady’s history, its most significant achievement has been its performances of the operas that I have written for them. The trilogy which began with Ruth (1996), and continued with John (1997),was completed with a third full-length opera, I Am (1998). Each operais based on a 12 tone series that borrows a hexachord from the previous opera’s series. For the sampler CD A Beckett Miscellany, I included two of the cycle’s instrumental dances and rearranged a third. The Dance Suite is an instrumental medley from John. It is arranged here for a number instruments present for the recording. In subsequent recitals with flutist Carolyn Stronks-Zeyl, I further arranged this work for flute and piano. In the Dance Suite, a flute opening gives way to a harmonically adventurous dance for strings. After a cadence in G, the joyful voice of Elizabeth is heard in the flute. The “prophecy of Zacharias” follows in the form of a ternary andante. The main section features a three-way conversation involving the cello, flute, and the voice of Zacharias represented by the clarinet; the faster, more turbulent middle section brings back the piano and strings. A return to the peaceful opening is brought to a close by the solo cello. We then jump to a later point in the opera and the chaotic dance that precedes the first appearance of Herod. This is followed by the dance of Salome, in which the anxious conclusion recalls the flute theme that opened this arrangement.
