Programme Note:
The length of this piece is not arbitrary
This piece is dedicated to the composer and percussionist Arthur Jarvinen. Art’s music encompasses a broad array of musical styles ranging from contemporary chamber music to surf music and Beatles parodies. In researching Art, I was drawn to his love of repetition, melody and process as well as his playful exploration of the boundaries of chamber music. The length of this piece is not arbitrary includes a conceptual quote from Art’s work "Serious Immobilities" (the following of Art’s concept; not an actual quote from the work) and is named in reference to "Hexations". Both of these works are in reference to Erik Satie’s "Vexations". The rhythmic opening of this work is a nod to works such as "Goldbeater’s Skin" and "The Vulture’s Garden". It was composed in reference to Art’s dates using a process which I would hope he would find amusing.

Painting a Portrait of Glass
This work evolved out of discussions with Pamela Lambert about the concept of painting glass. When one tries to paint glass objects on a canvass, you do not paint the piece of glass itself. When painting glass, you end up painting the refracted images of whatever is situated behind the glass object. Painting a Portrait of Glass attempts to sonically refract the pitch of E through colourations of the timbre of the instruments, through the detuning of pitch and an equal tempered reference to the harmonic series.
