Giancarlo Scalia

Born in Montreal, Giancarlo Scalia is very active as a pianist, vocal coach and composer. He has served as musical director or répétiteur for various companies such as Opéra immédiat, Opéra bouffe du Québec and the Halifax Summer Opera Festival as well as for Snowglobe Theatre, Light Opera of Montreal, Lakeshore Light Opera, Opéra Outside the Box, the Festival Classica and the operetta workshop of the École de musique Vincent d’Indy. He has performed as collaborative pianist throughout Canada as well as in France, Austria, Germany, Italy and China. Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, he has composed for various soloists and ensembles (Orchestre de la Francophonie, Ensemble Paramirabo, Ensemble Saxologie, soprano Sophie De Cruz, cellist Julie Hereish, the Orchestre d'Harmonie Leonardo da Vinci) and his works have been performed in Canada, the United States and Europe. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree and a DESS in piano performance under the direction of Jimmy Brière and Marc Durand and a Master’s degree in composition under the direction of Denis Gougeon from the Université de Montréal before pursuing his studies privately with pianists Walter Moore and Norman Shetler in Vienna and Claude Webster in Montréal. He has also participated in vocal accompaniment programs at the Orford Arts Centre, the Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours, the Wiener Musikseminar in Vienna, Vox Musicae in Senigallia and COSI in Sulmona (La bohème).
