Programme Note:
This song is about love and renewal in the context of one's rescuing a person who has suffered a crippling misfortune and is full of despair, and then helping that person back to stability and well-being. As such it is a tale to which many can relate. In this story the principal character is a very promising young soprano who is struck by a tragic accident during which she loses her husband (a gifted tenor) who himself is injured, and she loses the ability to continue her career and to make a sustainable living. What eventually revives her wholly
is her spirit and her fulfilled hope of the loving renewal and dedicated support of her family.

There are two passages in the work where there is a flashback to the "good times" before the accident. These are during measures 1-25 and 60-85.

The Italian words of the first stanza are taken from the poem by Lorenzo de’Medici: Trionfo di Bacco e Arianna.

Premiere Information:
19 May 2016, McMaster LIVELab, Hamilton, Ontario
Chelsea Van Pelt, soprano; Bud Roach, tenor; Sonia Shkalrov, violin; Elizabeth Loewen Andrews, violin; Elspeth Thomson, viola; Laura Jones, cello.

'Revival' was written to be premiered in the Live Lab Hall at McMaster University, where there are different types of acoustic available. The opening vocal duet and the final four measures of the work were performed in "cathedral acoustic" (i.e. at near-maximum reverberation), and the remainder of the work at "concert acoustic" (i.e. at a good concert hall level of reverberation). Where such options are not available, then the work may be performed without change of acoustic.

The tenor soloist sings only in the 'a capella' duet with soprano which begins the work (mm.1-25). He does not appear on stage. This duet needs to be pre-recorded, then played through speakers at the performance. If this is not possible, then it can be sung live at performance to the side of the stage, or close to the stage: in this case the soprano will be able to move to the middle of the stage during her tacet passage of twenty seconds when the quartet first starts playing at measures 26-31.
