Programme Note:
This composition is inspired by Stefan Zweig’s Castelio against Calvin or Conscience against Violence (1936). I found the subject still very present in today’s society and I wanted to depict in music the spirit of this work. I privileged the use of certain intervals like the minor third and the melody and harmony use chromaticism in abundance. The form of the piece is in 5 big sections: the lamentations, conscience, violence, the present (a sort of combat between conscience and violence) and a return to the lamentations via a flute monologue.

Premiere Information:
7 juillet 2017, Église St-Jérôme de Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croix, Métabetchouan, Québec, Canada; Orchestre de la Francophonie; Simon Rivard, chef d'orchestre.
