Programme Note:
When discussing the prospect of a new commission, harpist Michelle Gott and flautist Joanna G’Froerer wanted to create a program centered around the concept of water. Water is a defining political issue of today. Nearly half a billion people lack access to clean water, and that number is expected to rise. Drought and flooding are pervasive and worsening problems. Sea levels are rising. It is also beautiful, as seen in waterfalls, still reflective ponds, rainbows, and fresh snow. Water can create a powerful impetus for the creation of art. As I set out to write the work, I found a crystallized and poignant inspiration in a book called Watermarks poems by Joanne Page. Watermarks found its way to me rather serendipitously, having received it as a gift next to my mat at a Nova Yoga class in St John’s. It was placed there by Beth Follet, the publisher of Pedlar Press, and fellow Nova Yoga participant. As the title Watermarks suggests, the poems are often inspired and informed by water. Just before writing this work, I completed a new commission for Lady Cove women’s choir where I set Page’s Washed Away and I knew I wanted to do more with her poems. The poem Exit Eden became the primary inspiration for this instrumental piece. It resonates with me in many ways, but perhaps most powerfully, I love the way she mixes a creation myth with climate change. I composed this piece quite freely. It was the product of unusual creative bursts that almost always occurred when I was planning to do something else. It was the piece that wanted to write itself, and was a joy to compose as it was more about discovery than making plans. The work unfolds in five related movements arranged in an arch form that share common gestures, moods, and melody. Long rising and falling lines, ostinatos and harp-like arpeggio patterns are found throughout the work, set in diatonic scale patterns that are idiomatic to the harp. This work was commissioned by the National Arts Centre Orchestra's WolfGANG Sessions for Joanna G'froerer and Michelle Gott.
