Programme Note:
Aleksandr Blok's poem manages to be erotic, mystical, haunting, passionate, sensual and dreamlike all at once. As Marc Slonim wrote: 'Blok always described external phenomena as signs of spiritual realities and saw mystical visions in his erotic experiences.' The final stanza depicts a vertiginous fall into a reality which is 'too narrow for the heart.' My setting, I hope, evokes something of the dreamlike intensity of the poem's vivid journey. I was particularly inspired by the memorable juxtaposition of images of northern winter, and the dark southern sensuality of gypsies and their nocturnal singing - and by the image of horses galloping over a bottomless abyss into eternity.
