Programme Note:
“Archaeus is a principle first elucidated by Plato. The renowned Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu’s poem ‘Archaeus’ recalls the story of an old manuscript laying inert on a shelf and then brought to life by a modern discovery. In my opinion, we can consider the ‘Archaeus’ to be a virtual entity that could become real only under favourable circumstances. A score, for instance, is a virtual entity. It becomes real only when the performer sounds the music. We even can speak about an analogy between the ‘Archaeus’ principle and the musicians. If in classical music there are certain models, rules, traditions, about new music, each performance will be unique. This is because every new interpretation brings about a slightly different version that fits the ‘Archaeus’ principle.” - Dr. Liviu Dănceanu, artistic director of the Archaeus Ensemble.

MUSIC FOR ARCHAEUS, instrumental septet, encompasses three movements: I. Moto perpetuo; II. To Archaeus; III. Finale. The “Archaeus chord” gradually emerges from an initial pedal on A. The seven pitches generated from the letters of the word “Archaeus” soar above this pedal. A is the note A in English R comes from the French Ré and is used for the note D C is in the note C in English H is the note B in German A is the note A in English E is the note E in English U comes from Ut in Latin and is used for the note C-sharp S comes from Si, an abbreviation for Sancte Iohannes in Latin and is used for the note B-flat. Ut, later replaced by Do, is taken from the solfège system. This was originally based on a hymn to Saint John the Baptist [Sancte Iohannes] with the Latin words: “Ut queant laxis Resonare fibris, Mira gestorum, Famuli tuorum, Solve polluti, Labii reatum”. Within the piece, there are cadenzas for each performer recalling other of Badian’s works for solo instruments. She uses this technique as another interpretation of the “Archaeus” principle.” - Fred Popovici.
