Programme Note:
MULTIMUSIC CANADA, A LEGACY FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM, Symphonic Fresco in six modules with optional Multimedia, composed in 2000, is based on the same imaginary folklore tunes as my initial composition entitled, “MultiMusic Canada for the New Millennium, Instrumental Theatre for Orchestra, Chorus, and Multimedia”. It was composed in accordance with the size and range of the Radio TV Moldova National Symphony Orchestra, whose conductor Gheorghe Mustea expressed the interest to perform the composition at The Inauguration Concert of the 10th edition of “The Days of New Music”. It lasts for about 14 minutes in performance.

Maya Badian stated: “MultiMusic Canada for the New Millennium, Instrumental Theatre for Orchestra, Chorus, and Multimedia in six modules is the full concept of the composition including orchestra, chorus, and multimedia. It lasts for about 21 minutes in performance. Over the years, for practical reasons, when budgetary or other considerations make the full version impractical, I have composed two new, original works. Their general structures are similar to the original version. Based on the same imaginary folklore tunes as my initial composition, I re-organized and re-orchestrated the entire work, and attributed all of the choral parts to be performed by instruments from the orchestra: Module I, Genesis, remarks on the space of Canada before the coming of Europeans. Various musical configurations of First Peoples, Francophones, and Anglophones are used to reflect on the history of their interaction, culminating in the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Module II, Indigenos, using certain archetypal structures as found in some musical expressions of a selected group of Canada’s First Peoples, transposes the listeners back to the roots of Canada’s inhabitants Module III, Francophonos, inspired by French Canadian musical structures and presented in a perpetual rapid movement, suggests musical structures of French Canadians’ folk songs and melodies Module IV, Anglophonos, is based on the well-known song, Southern Cross, of English folk origin, presented in a polyphonic texture Module V, Canada Today, celebrating Canada’s rich and unique multiculturalism, is a combination of the musical structures of all today’s Canadians into a positive approach to the New Millennium Module VI, New Millennium Celebrations, inspired by the rhythmic and melodic basis of O Canada, Calixa Lavallée’s nation-binding hymn, brings a culminating set of polyphonic and harmonic synthesis. “O Canada, Long Life et longue vie !”, an original text, sung by all performers, concludes this Fresco. With MultiMusic Canada for the New Millennium, placed on a stage in the traditional concert hall, I wished to crystalize the amazing “cornucopia” of sung expressions that we share in Canada.” “Maya Badian’s contributions to Canadian music include publications, workshops, and lectures on contemporary composers. Her own composition, ‘MultiMusic Canada, A Legacy for the New Millennium’ grew out of her first strong impressions of Canada, with co-existence of many cultures, dialects, and languages.” - Keillor, Elaine: Music in Canada, Capturing Landscape and Diversity, McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2006, page 268.
