A forge, and a scythe
for solo guitar

Robert A. Baker
Composition Date: 1998
Duration: 00:09:00
Genre: Strings (plectral), Solo, Guitar / Lute, Solo

Instrumentation:

Instrumentation Set Number 1:
  • 1 x Guitar
Programme Note:
This piece pays homage to the 20th century guitar masterpieces by Villa-Lobos, Brouwer and Rodrigo. Inspired by the Raymond Carver poem from which I take the title, the formal design is free and improvisatory. The stylistic approach is highly idiomatic and the harmonic language is somewhat tonal, reflecting the contemplative mood of the poem.. A Forge, and a Scythe was written for guitarist Danielle Cumming, and a recording is available on her debut CD entitled Postcards.

Premiere Information:
February 1999, Heliconian Hall, Toronto; Danielle Cumming, guitar.
