Programme Note:THE SOLEMN LAND was composed in 2000 and premiered by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony that year; based on the painting by the same name by the Canadian Group-of-Seven artist JEH MacDonald, it depicts an austere and forbidding landscape on the Canadian Shield. Scored for full orchestra, the music proceeds at a deliberate tempo, slowly unfolding the various themes which will eventually rise to a tremendous climax, giving the impression of a brief but violent storm. The work has beem performed widely and is becoming a favoured member of the Canadian orchestral repertoire.
Premiere Information:April 20, 2004, St. Mary's Church, Kitchener, Ontario; Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony; Andrew Nikuforuk, conductor.
