Justin Mariner

Duration: 00:10:00

Instrumentation:

Instrumentation Set Number 1:
  • 1 x Clarinet
  • 1 x Piano
  • 1 x Violin
Programme Note:
A piece involving folk music. There are more questions than there are answers. What is our musical heritage? how do we reconcile the plurality of influences? How do we reconcile the old with the new, and how highly should we regard our past?

Unearth is a musical hybrid, stylistically impure. Although the work is partly shaped by contrasts, a number of resemblances emerge, engaging the memory both inside and outside the context of the piece. And if the title suggests not only a sense of discovery, but also one of exhuming something which has been buried, then so be it.

Premiere Information:
October 10, 2000, Théâtre du cuivre, Rouyn-Noranda, Québec; Trio contrastes; Stéphan Sylvestre, piano, Olivier Thouin, violin, David Veilleux, clarinet.
