Programme Note:
"This work was originally conceived as a ballet, very freely inspired by the Greek myth of Apollo and Hyacinthus. Although it is composed in a quasi-'Sinfonietta' structure (in that it incorporates some of the 'tradition movement' distinctions: Allegro-Adagio-Minuet, and Finale), it is most certainly a single movement, generated from mono-thematic material. These structures and thematic variations are often interrupted, revisited, or sometimes overlap each other. In this way, the piece falls short of being classified as a 'tone poem', in any linear sense of the term, but is rather an exploration of aspects of this moving tale of love between a god and a mortal man."
