Programme Note:
In Praise of Shadows focuses on a few musical gestures and colours which blur distinctions between harmony and timbre, material and instrument: from descending scales for the whole ensemble to flutes and solo trumpet shimmering between timbres, evoking wisps and shadows. The form of the work is related to the old Baroque form of the Passacaglia, in which a descending bass repeats for the duration of the piece. In this piece, however, the Passacaglia is sometimes delayed or obscured by contrast, "coloured silence" and shadows.
In Praise of Shadows (2003) was commissioned by Wim Boerman and Ensemble Ereprijs, to whom it is dedicated.

Premiere Information:
November 18th, 2003, Gigant, Apeldoorn, Netherlands; Ensemble de Ereprijs; Wim Megens, conductor.
