Programme Note:
Ancestral Voices is my third composition for strings alone in recent years. In as much as my Epitaph for strings (1980) was somewhat related to my very early string compositions in its use of high density blocks of sound, my second work Intermezzo (1994) was centred on the concept of a waltz crafted in lighter textures. This newest work, Ancestral Voices, while retaining some of the features of the previous two, brings into focus individual stylistic characteristics drawn from past composers who have profoundly influenced the development of my writing. At the same time the architecture of the work reflects my desire to merge chamber and orchestral writing within one composition.
