  • Additional Information:
  • Through a Haze, for clarinet (Bb) and piano, was inspired by the image of the reflection of trees and sky in a water surface as it is gradually obscured by rainfall, as shown in "Rained Out", a series of five photographs by Reinhard Reitzenstein.
The fixed harmonic configuration and the melodic and rhythmic structures asserted in the opening provide a directional sense through their tendency to continue, and to evolve. Through the course of the piece this "dimensionality" is absorbed into the texture and the image dissolves, leaving he timbres of the instruments in their outer registers.
In performance the clarinet should face theopen strings of the piano to allow maximum resonance.
