Programme Note:
In these dark, dramatic pieces for baritone and piano, Naina Jinga sought to create pieces that would “be capable of standing beside the extraordinary poems of (Romanian poet) Lucian Blaga.” These melancholic pieces are aptly set for piano and baritone voice, one which, according to Jinga, is somehow endowed with the power and depth needed to communicate the intense melancholy of these poems. These songs express emotional parallels to various images from nature, calling for an overt emotionalism from both the pianist and singer. Through a highly dissonant piano accompaniment, and extended playing techniques, the range of emotion in Blaga’s poetry is underscored. The vocal line, often blurring the line between spoken and sung declamations of the poetry, expresses the text and evokes the emotional side of the passionate text.
In the first song, ‘Melancholy’, the poem’s rain is evoked in the upper register of the piano, and then echoed in weeping figures in the voice. The subject, however, is careful to distinguish that the pain is “not inside me” but rather “in the rivulets of rain.” In the second movement, ‘Nu-mi presimti’, the subject’s life and madness are likened to “a drop of dew held by rays of light” and “a gushing spring,” images that are also evoked in the passionate piano accompaniment. The rising tension of this movement is also created in the speech-song style of the vocal line. The third song, ‘Interludiu’ contains a bitterness and melancholic complacency that are expressed in the violent and dissonant piano lines. A restrained improvisation on the strings of the piano provides a surreal contrast for the final raw outbursts in the voice.
