Programme Note:
The final few years of Elliot Weisgarber’s life saw a return of his interests and travels to his native hemisphere. His American roots came to the fore with his 1996-97 Colloquies for Flute and Orchestra but prior to that he had become fascinated and thoroughly dedicated to the work of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. With the intention of setting a number of Neruda’s poems to music Weisgarber pursued the study of Spanish in order to better understand the poetry in the language of its creator.

The Canciones, for soprano and piano, were all written in Vancouver the first appearing on Christmas Eve 1995, the last on Aug. 5, 1999. The composer orchestrated six of the original 13 songs in the year 2000. Five of the six songs are for soprano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, 2 horns, harp and strings while the sixth is for soprano and strings alone. This is not a song cycle and the songs may be sung in any order, as many or as few as programming will allow. The songs are published here in the order in which the composer left them.
The poems selected by Weisgarber are all from Neruda’s collection entitled Cien sonetos de amor (100 Love Sonnets). Permission to compose, publish and otherwise disseminate the Canciones using Neruda’s poetry was graciously granted by La Fundación Pablo Neruda, Santiago, Chile and by La Sociedad Chilena del Derecho de Autor.
