Programme Note:
The title Aftermath has a direct meaning with regards to where the piece is situated in my musical output, and a more suggestive meaning in relation to an interpretation of the work. Aftermath reflects the consequences of some of my previous pieces which refer to folk music, but I was no longer interested in dealing with folk music in such a direct way, and while some sections use techniques from previous works, there is only a hint of specific folk music styles. These sections, which use dance-like rhythmic patterns along with clear melodies, are presented in contrast to "abstract" sections of gradually changing harmonies. The abstract sections tend to begin like tangled webs made up of many melodic strands, but as these chaotic textures thin out, patterns emerge. It is in this way that the aftermath of some sort of disaster is suggested. I did not want the two different types of sections to be heard as different movements, but instead as contradictory parts of a single thing. For this reason, silences are not used so much to separate sections as to interrupt them.
Aftermath was commissioned for the 2001 festival of l'Association des Orchestres de jeunes du Québec with the assistance of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
