Programme Note:
Th "Three Night Songs of Li Pai, Op.6" (1957) was composed in the composer's student time. By that time, the composer has already set his mind in modernizing Chinese music, and this has always been his primary goal.

Li Po is one of the most famous poets in the Tang Dynasty in the Chinese history. His unique but impressive wordings and meanings made him ever success in the poet's world.

I. In the Quiet Night
So bright a gleam on the foot of my bed -
Could there have been a frost already?
Lifting myself to look, I found that it was moonlight.
Sinking back again, I thought suddenly of home.

II. A Song of an Autumn Midnight
A slip of the moon hangs over the capital;
Ten thousand washing-mallets are pounding;
And the autumn wind is blowing my heard
For ever and ever toward the Jade Pass...
Oh, when will the Tartar troops be conquered,
And my husband come back from the long campaign!

III. Drinking Alone with the Moon
From a pot of wine among the flowers
I drank alone. There was no one with me -
Till, raising my cup, I asked the bright moon
To bring me my shadow and make us three.
Alas, the moon was unable to drink
And my shadow tagged me vacantly;
But still for a while I had these friends
To cheer me through the end of spring...
I sang. The moon encouraged me.
I danced. My shadow tumbled after.
As long as I know, we were been companions.
And then I was drunk, and we lost one another.
... Shall goodwill ever be secure?
I watch the long road of the River of Stars.
