Programme Note:
This choral elegy is a simple setting (largely in quasi - "fausbourdon" style), with much stepwise motion and a single recurring signal-motto in the accompaniment. "..and yet.." is a short ode by the Minnesota poet Alvin Greenberg written following the death of a loved one. The score was commissioned by the Illinois Wesleyan University Chorale, David Nott, conductor and completed in December of 1984 in Dallas, Texas and Ormond, Florida; the first performance was given in Bloomington, Illinois in April 1985. The work is dedicated to the memory of the American composer George Cacioppo, a longtime friend.

Poem by Alvin Greenberg:

and yet...

The poem begins right there, where your arm branches from the slender body of the world down the long path of exile to the empty palm,

a trail each line i write attempts to follow down through the golden down of imagination to stand here, alone, at last, this far from

everything. no word survives to lead us back. no image frees us from the gravity of death. no metaphor reshapes what's happened. and yet: in the slow memory of the poem your arm turns, pulling me back, back to that world, lifting me up in the soft basket of your hand

to a real world as real as if it still were, as real as this chasm of words, above which the long lines of your fingers keep us safe.
